Play with your food!
Kids like to play, so why not create art and fun with vegetables?
My sister Amy has a young boy, Elias. He loves pirates right now, so kale from the garden is called "pirate food." It makes you strong for pirate adventures! And yes, he eats kale.
Remember Popeye and spinach? And his girl friend was Olive Oil; they go together.
Many companies are trying to get your kids to eat their products. McDonald's uses toys to sell its food. When I was a kid, toys were put into cereal boxes.
So we natural foodies can take back our kids food! Let's make it fun. How about making a face shape on a white plate, with curly parsley for hair, bell pepper for a mouth, and carrot slices for eyes?
And if you can bring your child to a farm and they see a carrot pulled from the ground, this seems like a miracle to them.
Let's get our kids to love real food.
Some fun ideas are here at this blog, Aupair.org

GE crops a solution to world hunger?
The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is promoting GE (genetically engineered) crops, saying they will help end world hunger. GE crops can be bred to survive adverse conditions, they say.
But, GE depends on patented seeds, synthetic pesticide and fertilizers. GE crops are designed to be used with expensive herbicides, such as the Round Up Ready crops.
GE seeds are patented, and The biotech companies own them. If you save their seeds, you can be criminally prosecuted.
So farmers in India, for instance, must buy new seeds from biotech companies every year. And GE seed costs 2-6 times the price of conventional seeds. Plus they will need more herbicides and pesticides.
The UN World Food programs says farmers can't afford this.
The real solutions to world hunger are access to land and local, inexpensive regional sources of seeds, compost and mulch. The solutions to world hunger are permaculture, organics, and food sovereignty.
We need to be able to save our seeds! Heirloom seeds and organic seeds are stronger seeds, too.

Eggs may be good for you
I've been researching vitamin D, and found out it's in egg yolks. Yes, the yolk is good for you!
The egg yolk has Vitamins A and D, and healer are saying that everyone needs more vitamin D.
Eggs also contain choline, a precursor to acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter that is deficient in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. So we think choline boosts the brain.
Eggs are a good source of protein and easy to digest. But they are also a common allergen. So listen to your body and see how you react to them.
What about egg quality? You can buy Omega 3 eggs from range free hens, or commercial eggs from factory farms! The free range hens eat their natural diet of bugs, worms and grass, so they create a healthy egg for us.
There are organic eggs available. What does it take to earn the organic seal? Read about it at the link below.

Should Whole Foods Market label GMO food?
That's the question going through the natural foods community.
Many of the "natural foods" products contain GMO foods. It's in canola, cotton oil, soy ingredient, corn and more.
If Whole foods demanded GMO labels, there would be a lot of labels on natural foods. Companies would be exposed as not so natural.
The natural foods companions might be forced to change their ingredients list!
The Organic Consumers Association makes a good point in the article at the link. They argue that if we all ban together, companies will change.
I'm for transparency.

Good news for childrens' school lunch
On Jan 25, 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama announced new guidelines for the National School Lunch Program. This program serves 31 million children a subsidized breakfast and lunch.
The new guidelines add more whole grains, fruits and vegies, and lower salt, calories and fats.
Yea! Gardens, kitchens and now the school lunch room are transforming with fresh food. I am hopeful.

California right to know act
Currently in California, a group of concerned citizens are collecting voter signatures. They need 80,000 signatures to get an initiative on the ballot: The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act of 2012.
This could be big! California could be the first state to require the labeling of GE foods.
If passed into law, GE foods would be labeled on packages below the ingredients label. Foods not packaged on store shelves would be required to post a sign. And GE foods could not be labeled "natural". Restaurant foods are exempt, however.
Currently, 50 countries around the world require GE foods to be labeled. The European Union does, as does China and Japan. So it's about time for the US to label these foods!
If this bill passes, food manufacturers might find it difficult to label GE foods just for one state. So perhaps they will label all their products. And then we will all benefit.
Go California! Blaze a trail!

Choose local fruit for your juices
Much of the orange juice in the US comes from Brazil. And recently the FDA found a fungicide, carbendazin, in orange juice. This is an "unlawful pesticide reside" in the US.
Imported fruits contain more pesticides than US fruits. Many countries have lax pesticide laws. So who knows what you are getting in your morning OJ or apple juice. 60% of apple juice concentrate comes from China.
It's safer to eat local and organic fruits. Or buy your fruit from farmers in the US, where we have more stringent pesticide laws.
The article below tells you more about it. And I think you'll get a kick out of the famous author!

Harvard presents the Healthy Eating Plate
The Harvard School of Public Health has created a healthy eating plate diagram. Click on the link below to see it.
I like the plate because it's visual and practical. It's easy to apply.
Overall it looks good. Just remember you are unique and listen to your body. Adjust the portions to you.
Harvard says it's not influenced by food lobbyists, and they only used studies on diet and health to create the plate.
Then why do they not mention organics and GMO concerns. And they recommend oils that are usually refined or GMO, like canola.
It's like researchers are in a hypnotic trance about GMO's; they just don't see them!
I look forward to the day when herbs and herbal teas are added to these scholarly guides. And when GMO is openly discussed. Holding the vision!
