10 Healthy Food Tips

healthy fresh food

Here are some healthy food tips to help your diet be simple, fun and delicious.

Healthy food tips

1. Forget calorie counting! Diets make you feel deprived. Health is about nourishment. You can be healthy without calorie counting.

2. Choose real foods. These are foods from a farm or garden. Ask yourself: could this grow in a garden? Do I recognize it as a simple food? Peaches are real food, marshmallows and Debbie donuts are not!

Enjoy peaches and yogurt with mint. Have some basil, garlic, olive oil and whole grain pasta with beans or fish. These are yummy!

Let your taste buds adjust. Processed foods are full of sugar, salt and fats. So real foods may taste plain at first. Give it time. Also, organic produce does taste better than conventionally grown produce.

3. Use a good quality vegetable knife. You will be chopping a lot! You will also need a sturdy cutting board, and a few colanders to wash grains, beans, fruit and vegies. Learn about creating a healthy kitchen

4. Choose whole grains and beans, add in colorful vegies, and supplement with meats, sauces, and fruits. This diet is found in the blue zones, areas of the world where people live in health beyond 100! So it works in real life.

5. Choose gluten free grains. Many people have trouble digesting gluten. Try millet, quinoa and brown rice. There are many gluten free grains.

6. Choose a natural sweetener. Natural sweeteners are stevia, rice syrup, barley malt, high quality maple syrup, apple juice and apple sauce, and pure honey.

Be sure your honey is pure honey. Many honey products are cut with corn syrup and other sugars. Use a local raw honey.

Stevia is good because it doesn't affect blood sugar. Rice syrup and barley malt affect blood sugar somewhat. Honey and maple syrup are sweeter will affect blood sugar the most. Use with caution.

Another healthy food tip: fruit can be cooked and pureed and used as a sweetener, too. Raisins work well this way.

7. Choose healthy oils. I recommend flax oil, extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, grapeseed oil and coconut oil. Choose organic and unrefined. Olive oil is a good basic oil. You may do well with organic butter, too.

8. Use sea salt. Most salt is refined and has additives in it. Sea salt has a full spectrum of minerals. Be careful with salt, though. Use just enough to bring out the flavors, but not taste salty.

9. Choose healthy vinegars. Replace distilled vinegar with apple cider vinegar and rice vinegar. These vinegars are less acidic and apple cider vinegar is fermented and good for your digestion. It's also high in potassium and other minerals.

When you buy condiments, find ones made with grain vinegar rather than distilled vinegar. Or make your own condiments.
